Ubisoft's Bogdan Bridinel on the beauty of asymmetric gaming

The Wii U GamePad has given Ubisoft the opportunity to create a ZombiU multiplayer game that can be enjoyed by hardcore and casual gamers. That's the word from the game's Content Design Director Bogdan Bridinel who told Official Nintendo Magazine what asymmetric gaming meant for his new game.

This game is going to be one of the most popular launch games!

Does any one know if the Wii u will be capable of running 2 game pads at once when they come available to buy? or will the Wii u be limited to only running one game pad?

The Wii U will natively support 2 Game Pads running simultaneously, but because no games support it yet, unless you're rich enough to buy a second Game Pad, there's no point in doing so.

I dare say Nintendo will release a firmware update to fix internal issues in the future, and cover that up by saying it'll enable you to use 2 Game Pads simultaneously.

So long as this attempt to please everyone doesn't end up leaving us with a poorly developed multiplayer that pleases no one (such as, everything about Resi 6) then great!

That's not really true though, is it. The best example is pokémon, a "casual" player will run through the game, catching pokémon they like, training them up, perhaps go online, and have a great time doing it all.
but a "hardcore" (perhaps a better word needs to be used) player will tacitly pick the best pokémon, EV and IV train them all, grind to the best levels, holding back evolutions to get the best move sets, and no doubt go online.

The point is, Zombiu is trying to do the same, by giving gameplay that you can pick up and play, and enjoy, or if you like get stuck right on into and obliterate everything (or not, if that's the best way to play). It's a great move, but one which a lot of devs can't seem to pull off, and not for lack of trying either, some games just don't suit one play style or the other. this game is looking really good so far, quietly confident it lives up to it.

Of course there is a difference! Casual games like say for example.....Farmville, Wii sports etc, can hardly be put in the same bracket as hardcore titles such as Dark Souls, Monster Hunter, WoW, ect - I can't see my old dear power leveling a BE Mage anytime soon, but she does like a bit of bowling and archery on wii sports ;)

The difference between casual and hardcore gaming is a bit like the difference between casual and hardcore filmgoers. Casual filmgoers just go and see whatevers popular, mabye with friends. Hardcore filmgoers, on the other hand, see only the best films, but also know a lot about most of the upcoming films and also knows a fair bit about classic films and the history of cinema.
As you can tell, I like the 3DS. A lot.
